Understanding the Standard License on Adobe Stock

I remember the first time I licensed an image from Adobe Stock. I needed a clean cityscape for a client presentation, downloaded it in two clicks, and dropped it into my slides. Two weeks later the client asked, “Can we use this photo on the big digital billboard downtown?” That’s when I actually opened the license agreement and started sweating.

Most of us grab assets fast and hope for the best. Today I want to save you that panic moment. Let’s break down the Standard License in plain words, exactly what you can and can’t do, based on years of using it myself.

When you click “License” on Adobe Stock and pay the regular price (not the extended one), you get the Standard License. Simple as that.

It lets one person (you or your client) use the image, video, or template in one project. Think social media posts, blog banners, YouTube thumbnails, presentations, website designs for a single client, even printed flyers up to a certain number.

But it has limits. Big limits if your project blows up.

What Can You Actually Do With It?

Here are the main things I do every week under the Standard License without worrying:

  • Put the image on my portfolio website
  • Use it in client mockups and final designs (websites, apps, ebooks)
  • Post it on Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, TikTok
  • Print it on business cards, posters, or t-shirts if I stay under 500,000 copies
  • Use it in one YouTube video, even if the video gets millions of views

Views and impressions? Unlimited online. That part surprised me the first time. Adobe doesn’t care if your post gets 10 views or 10 million. The restriction is on physical copies, not digital eyeballs.

Quick Yes List

  • Website hero images
  • Blog featured images
  • Social media graphics
  • Online ads (Google, Facebook, Instagram)
  • Email newsletters
  • Presentation slides
  • Ebook covers and inside pages

All good.

Can I use it for a client?

Yes, all the time. I license Standard images for clients every month. The rule is simple: one license = one end use. If I design a website for a bakery, the bakery can use those photos forever on that site. I don’t need to buy extra licenses for them.

What about print runs bigger than 500,000?

That’s the wall. If you need more than 500,000 posters, brochures, or book copies, you must buy the Extended License. I once had a client who wanted to print 750,000 product packaging boxes. Standard wouldn’t cover it, so we paid for Extended. Cost more, but no risk.

Can I sell t-shirts or mugs with the image?

Yes, up to 500,000 units total. I’ve done small merch drops on Printful using Standard licenses, 200 hoodies, 300 mugs, no problem. Just don’t plan to sell a million.

The Tricky Parts Nobody Talks About

License an Adobe Stock image Adobe Commerce

No standalone resale

You can’t sell the raw file or barely changed versions. Turning a photo into an NFT and selling it? No. Printing it on canvas and selling as wall art? No, that needs Extended.

No porn or offensive use

Pretty obvious, but Adobe will terminate your account fast if you use assets in adult content or anything defamatory.

One seat, one user

If your teammate also needs to edit the file, technically they should have their own Adobe account with the license credited, or you work in shared libraries properly. In small teams most of us just share the PSD and move on, but big companies get strict about this.

Real Stories From My Desk

Last year I licensed a beautiful mountain photo for a travel agency’s new website. Six months later they decided to print 50,000 brochures. Still fine under Standard.

Another time I used a Standard-licensed illustration in a mobile app. App got 3 million downloads. Zero issues, because digital distribution has no view limit.

But I once almost messed up badly. A client wanted the same photo on their website and on 800,000 product labels. I caught it before downloading and upgraded to Extended. Saved everyone a huge headache.

How to Check Your License Quickly

Open your Adobe Stock account, go to License History, click the little “i” icon next to any asset. It tells you exactly which license you have and the date. Do this before you promise anything big to a client.

Final Thoughts – Is Standard Enough for You?

For 95% of freelancers, small agencies, bloggers, YouTubers, and startups, the Standard License is perfect. I’ve built entire brand identities, dozens of websites, and hundreds of social campaigns on it without ever needing Extended.

Only upgrade when you hit physical product runs over 500,000, want to sell prints/posters, or work on big-budget film/TV.

That’s it. Next time you’re about to license something on Adobe Stock, you’ll know exactly what you’re buying, no cold sweats two weeks later.

Grab the right license, sleep well, and keep creating.
